Probably the best sushi in the neighborhood, although Silver Rice is awesome; Gen does a different thing though, with lots of daily specials, inventive combos, and fresh chef touches. Good sake and beer menu. Weathered outside begets cozy and intimate seating inside - interesting corner space. For its small size, punches way above its weight. Nice service. Good value with price options for all kinds of folks. Tasty. Gets crowded on peak times on weekends.
Incredible fresh fish! We ordered the Omakase and it did not disappoint. Every fish was yummy. We also had miso and edamame as starters. Their sale selection excellent as well. The ambiance is very cute and intimate. Great service! We had an excellent experience overall. Perfect for a date or small group.
Ive been coming here since they first opened in the early 2000s when I was in my early 20s. Much of the neighborhood has changed since then, but Gen hasnt. The food and attention to detail is super high quality, and the price reasonable. Now we bring our children here, the next GEN-eration, and they love it as much as we do. Thank you, Gen!
Gen is authentic, serving very high quality food. Terrific sake and specialty beer list. The service is great and the vibe is comfortable and unfussy. Oh, and they have the best japanese curry in Brooklyn!
My wife and I have lived in the neighborhood for years and this was our first time trying Gen. We had a wonderful time. The karage was amazing and the sushi was so fresh. Best part? We asked to take some of our mains home with us, we open the bag and there’s a surprise can of the Sake we ordered during our meal. Incredible experience, incredible staff. This is my daughter’s favorite spot for Japanese food in Brooklyn. The food here is consistent. We have been coming to Gen for over 10 years but I just decided to take photos for a review now. If you look for a spot for a Japanese brunch on the weekends, give them a try!
Been coming here for 6 years. Consistently excellent. Really nice service, very fresh fish, cute but chill atmosphere. Secretly some of the best ramen in the neighborhood. A lot of staff, especially kitchen, have been there for years, which means they probably treat their employees well. Japanese breakfast, bento lunch, omakase dinner - I’ve tried it all. I’ve been lucky enough to visit Japan several times and this place would be successful in Tokyo. We’re lucky to have it in Prospect Heights.
An old standby that is absolutely one of the best sushi restaurants in the neighborhood! Unbelievable and *affordable* omakase, low key some of the best ramen in BK, wonderful daily specials. Staff is incredibly nice. Don’t miss!
